AMD Plans to Bring FSR4 to Gaming Handhelds by the End of 2026

AMD is planning to expand its FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR4) upscaling technology beyond Radeon graphics cards. The company aims to bring FSR4 to APUs, gaming laptops and handheld gaming devices by the end of 2026.

The roadmap was discussed by Jack Huynh, AMD’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Computing and Graphics Group, during a meeting in Seoul, South Korea.

FSR4 Expands Beyond Radeon GPUs

FSR4 uses machine learning and AI-based technology to improve gaming performance and image quality by rendering games at a lower resolution and reconstructing the final image at a higher resolution.

AMD initially introduced FSR4 with its RDNA4-based Radeon RX 9000 series graphics cards. Support was later expanded to RDNA3 Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs, while AMD has also indicated that older RDNA2 hardware will eventually receive support.

The company now wants to take the technology further by bringing it to APUs, laptops and gaming handhelds.

Possible Impact on Gaming Handhelds

AMD has not yet confirmed exactly which products will support FSR4. Rumours have pointed to a possible Ryzen Z3 series for future gaming handhelds, potentially using Zen 6 architecture and RDNA4-based graphics, although these details remain unconfirmed.

For handheld gaming, FSR4 could be particularly useful. Portable devices have to balance performance, battery life and heat within tight limits, so efficient upscaling can help deliver smoother gameplay without requiring significantly more powerful hardware.

What to Expect

AMD’s plan to bring FSR4 to handhelds and other APU-based devices by the end of 2026 could make its next generation of portable gaming hardware more capable.

For now, the company has not revealed the complete list of supported APUs or handhelds. More details should emerge as AMD moves closer to its 2026 rollout.
